Terms of service
These Terms of Service (the “Terms”) govern access to bureauobscura.com, the Field Recovery service, customer accounts, and purchases from Bureau Obscura (“Bureau Obscura,” “we,” “us,” or “our”). By using the site, creating an account, submitting a recovery request, or placing an order, you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, do not use the service.
1. Eligibility and customer accounts
You must be legally able to enter into a binding agreement where you live. If you use the service for another person or organization, you represent that you have authority to bind them. Customer identity and checkout are provided through Shopify. You are responsible for the accuracy of information supplied through your account and for promptly reporting suspected unauthorized use.
Creating an account does not itself subscribe you. If the email-marketing preference is enabled when you submit your information, we may send Bureau releases, archive notices, and offers. You may clear that preference before continuing and may unsubscribe from marketing at any time. Account, security, and transaction messages may still be sent when necessary.
2. Field Recovery
Field Recovery produces an artistic olfactory interpretation from the information you submit. A recovery, dossier, designation, image, description, or formula is creative material. It is not a scientific finding, historical authentication, medical advice, or a promise that a scent will recreate an experience exactly.
Generation limits, availability, and processing times may change to protect the service and control provider costs. We may reject, pause, or remove a request that is unlawful, abusive, unsafe, infringes another person's rights, attempts to bypass service limits, or cannot be responsibly processed.
3. Customer submissions
You retain any rights you already hold in text and images you submit. You grant us and our service providers a limited license to host, reproduce, analyze, transform, and transmit those materials only as reasonably necessary to operate Field Recovery, maintain your account history, fulfill an order, prevent misuse, comply with law, and provide customer support.
You represent that you have permission to submit the materials and that they do not violate law or another person's privacy, publicity, copyright, or other rights. Do not submit contact details, medical information, or other sensitive personal information in the free-text fields. We do not use a customer's submission, dossier, or recovery image in public marketing without separate, express permission.
4. Bureau materials and permitted use
The Bureau Obscura name, marks, site design, software, systems, and general methods remain the property of Bureau Obscura or their respective licensors. A purchase permits you to possess and personally use the physical product and accompanying dossier delivered with that order. It does not transfer our trademarks, platform, software, general methods, or a right to commercially manufacture, reproduce, license, or resell Bureau-generated formulas, dossiers, or imagery. Any broader commercial rights must be granted in a separate written agreement.
5. Products, safety review, and sensory variation
Field Recovery is a bespoke fragrance offering produced only after an order is accepted. Every formula remains subject to manual safety, legal, sourcing, stability, and manufacturing review. We may make changes reasonably required to manufacture the product safely and lawfully, place an order on hold while clarification is needed, or cancel an order we cannot responsibly fulfill. If we cancel an accepted paid order, we will return the amount paid for that order.
Fragrance materials and natural materials may vary between batches, and scent perception is subjective. Follow the product label and ingredient information, use only as directed, discontinue use if irritation occurs, and keep fragrance away from children, eyes, flame, and heat.
6. Orders, pricing, and payment
Displaying a product or generating a dossier is not acceptance of an order. An order is subject to availability, payment authorization, fraud review, service eligibility, and our acceptance. Field Recovery costs $265 total for an eligible United States order. That amount includes eligible ground delivery and any applicable sales tax; no separate shipping charge, duty, handling fee, or discount is added to or subtracted from that total. You agree to provide current and accurate billing, contact, and delivery information through Shopify.
We may refuse or cancel an order for a pricing or listing error, suspected fraud, prohibited destination, service misuse, safety concern, or inability to fulfill. We will return amounts collected for an order that we cancel.
Estimated dispatch is within 4 to 6 weeks after we receive a properly completed order, including payment authorization and all information needed to fulfill it. If we cannot ship within the stated dispatch time, we will send a delay notice before that deadline with a revised shipment date, or state that we cannot provide one. The notice will offer you the choice to consent to the delay or cancel the unshipped order for a prompt full refund. If we cannot ship or do not obtain any consent required by law, we will cancel the order and issue a prompt full refund.
7. Final sales, replacements, and shipping
All sales are final except where applicable law requires otherwise. The complete conditions, including replacement of products damaged in transit, are stated in our Refund Policy. Dispatch eligibility, ground-transport restrictions, estimates, and address responsibilities are stated in our Shipping Policy.
8. Acceptable use
You may not use the site or service to:
- violate law, regulation, sanctions, or another person's rights;
- submit unlawful, exploitative, deceptive, or malicious material;
- probe, disrupt, overload, scrape, reverse engineer, or bypass the site's security, account, quota, or access controls;
- introduce malware or use automated systems without our written permission; or
- impersonate another person or provide false account, payment, or delivery information.
9. Third-party services
Shopify provides customer identity, commerce, checkout, payment, and certain customer communications. Cloud and generation providers support other parts of Field Recovery. Those services may have their own terms and privacy practices. We remain responsible for our own commitments but do not control a third party's independent systems or availability.
10. Privacy
Our Privacy Policy explains how information is collected, used, retained, shared, and deleted. Customer free text may contain personal information even though we ask you not to include contact, medical, or other sensitive details there.
11. Service availability and disclaimers
We work to keep the site and service available, secure, and accurate, but interruptions, maintenance, provider failures, and errors may occur. To the fullest extent permitted by law, the site and digital service are provided “as available” without warranties not expressly stated in these Terms. Nothing in these Terms excludes warranties or consumer rights that cannot lawfully be excluded.
12. Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, Bureau Obscura will not be liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages arising from use of the site or service. Our aggregate liability arising from a product or order will not exceed the amount you paid for the product or order giving rise to the claim. These limits do not apply where prohibited by law or to liability that cannot lawfully be limited.
13. Suspension and termination
We may restrict or terminate access when reasonably necessary to protect customers, the Bureau, service providers, or the public; respond to unlawful conduct; enforce these Terms; or preserve system security. Provisions that by their nature should survive termination—including ownership, payment, disclaimers, and liability limits—will survive.
14. Changes, severability, and waiver
We may update these Terms by posting a revised version and effective date. Material changes apply prospectively unless law requires otherwise. If a provision is unenforceable, the remaining provisions remain effective. A failure to enforce a provision once is not a waiver of the right to enforce it later.

FIELD RECOVERY // PRIVACY SUPPLEMENT
Field Recovery information
Supplement effective September 2, 2026.
We collect recovery-request text, optional reference files, and generated recovery records linked to your account. We use this information to authenticate agents, create and preserve requested recoveries, prevent misuse, fulfill orders, provide support, and comply with law.
We disclose relevant information only as reasonably necessary to categories of providers supporting cloud hosting and security, account authentication, AI-assisted content generation, commerce and payments, fulfillment, email delivery, and analytics or advertising where enabled. This notice describes information practices; it does not disclose Bureau trade secrets or proprietary recovery methods.
Optional reference files are used as short-lived source material and are excluded from the filed recovery record. The service attempts to delete them when processing ends; a storage-expiration backstop is scheduled after one day and may take additional time to complete. Filed recovery text, generated records, and account associations remain available in the Case Cabinet until the agent withdraws the field account or another lawful retention need applies. Commerce, payment, tax, fraud-prevention, and order records may remain under separate store and service-provider controls for the periods required to operate the service and comply with law.
A private report created to fulfill or document a privacy request is a separate restricted record. It may remain accessible only to the Bureau records desk for request handling, security, and compliance evidence for up to 30 days, including after a field-account withdrawal, and is then covered by an automatic storage-expiration rule. The storage provider may require additional time to complete deletion after the report becomes eligible.
Do not place contact details, government identifiers, medical information, or other sensitive personal information in recovery-request text or attachments. Marketing messages are sent only under the communication preference recorded for the account or order, and every promotional message includes an unsubscribe method. Verified agents may use the controls below to obtain or withdraw Bureau-held Field Recovery records; requests affecting commerce records may also require separate store verification.

To protect Field Recovery from automated abuse, Bureau Obscura uses Cloudflare Turnstile for background human verification. Turnstile processes limited technical signals under Cloudflare's Turnstile Privacy Addendum.
